It’s hard to believe we’re already in March! Warm weather may still be a few weeks away (although I’m ready any time now…) but there’s already plenty to celebrate this month—including, of course, Women’s History. Here are five of my favorite titles to give some color to your March reading list:
Catching the Moon: The Story of A Young Girl’s Baseball Dream, by Crystal Hubbard, illus. by Randy DuBurke
A spunky young girl proves that America’s favorite pastime is not just for boys.
In Her Hands: The Story of Sculptor Augusta Savage, by Alan Schroeder, illus. by JaeMe Bereal
She left for New York City with $5 in her pocket, and became a guiding light of the Harlem Renaissance.
Hiromi’s Hands, by Lynne Barasch
The story of the first female sushi chef in America!
Zora Hurston and the Chinaberry Tree, by William Miller, illus. by Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu
The childhood biography of legendary author Zora Neale Hurston.
Tofu Quilt, by Ching Yeung Russell
A girl growing up in 1960s Hong Kong won’t let anyone talk her out of becoming a writer.
I’ve also come across some great online resources this year, including this blog featuring posts by bloggers, authors, and illustrators about their favorite books celebrating Women’s History. Do check it out! And if you have other favorite books or resources for the month (and the rest of the year, of course), share them in the comments!
