Session 259: Michigan’s approach to supporting multilingual learners in preschool
Friday, November 8, 2024
8:00–09:30 AM PST
Anaheim Convention Center, Room 211B (P. 93 in the conference program)
Young multilingual learners comprise a large proportion of children in early learning and care settings. We know from recent research that children have the capacity to learn more than one language and that developing bilingualism has linguistic, academic, and cognitive benefits.
Greater understanding is needed, however, to understand the ways in which early learning and care providers can best support young MLs’ language development. This session will provide an overview of Michigan’s approach to addressing the diverse needs of young MLs through multi-pronged professional development opportunities focusing on research-based literacy strategies using Cultivating Oral Language and Literacy Talent in Students (COLLTS).
