Beyond Superheroes: Graphic Novels and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
Sunday, March 17 | 1:45 – 2:45 pm | McCormick Place West, Room W181c, Level 1
Graphic novels have increased in popularity due to their engaging layouts and timely academic applications; they not only capture reluctant readers but are also wonderful vehicles to promote visual literacy. In this session, learn how educators are using these multimodal texts to broach and explore difficult, current topics, such as gangs, police brutality, the school-to-prison pipeline, and the Black Lives Matter movement. Katie Potter, Literacy Specialist at Lee & Low Books, will join acclaimed graphic novel illustrator Stacey Robinson (I Am Alfonso Jones) to discuss the graphic novel creation process and the message conveyed to readers through art. Participants will come away with ready-to-implement teaching strategies and classroom activities.
Join us immediately following the panel at 3pm in booth 1848 for a book signing with Stacey Robinson!
CABE 2019: The California Association of Bilingual Educators
California friends, join us in Long Beach at the CABE Annual Conference in booth #219 where we’ll have posters, giveaways, and lots of new bilingual books to share! Also join us for our signing:
Book Signing: Mamá the Alien/ Mamá la extraterrestre with René Colato Laínez and Laura Lacámara
