Author & Illustrator Visits

A visit from an author or illustrator is a great way to encourage literacy, bring books to life, and allow young people to see themselves as storytellers, too. Our creators are eager to connect with readers in schools, libraries, and more!

Before Scheduling a Visit

When organizing an in-person or virtual event, consider the following:

Do you have the budget for an honorarium?

A creator’s time and expertise are valuable, and they should be compensated accordingly. Offering an honorarium to an author or illustrator shows them that the host organization is invested in a successful event.

Honorariums vary depending on the specifics of the visit, like if it’s in-person or virtual, if books are purchased, the number and length of presentation(s), and whether it’s local or out-of-state. Debut creators often keep their fees modest, so they can gain more experience. Veteran authors and illustrators may have a negotiable sliding scale, especially if a certain quantity of books is ordered.

Remember that if an author or illustrator is traveling from out-of-town, their travel (flight, mileage, etc.) and lodging expenses should be covered separately from their honorarium. Depending on your budget, you might want to start with an author or illustrator who lives in your area.

What kind of visit works best for your readers?

Having a clear picture of the format of the event align expectations for all parties involved, ensuring everyone’s goals are accomplished. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you want someone who will do a series of small workshops, or someone who can present to a large all-school assembly?
  • Are you envisioning a short Q&A or a longer presentation?
  • How old is the primary audience?
  • What kind of AV equipment do you have ready access to?
  • What is your timeline?

Many creators schedule visits months in advance. Planning early gives you a better shot at your preferred date with the author or illustrator of your choosing, especially if your schedule is set and there’s no room for flexibility. Allow plenty of time before the visit to prep readers, colleagues, and staff, getting them acquainted with the book and creator. If this is a public-facing event, plan out how you’ll get the word out about the event to your core audience.

What is your capacity for buying books?

Facilitating a book sale can be a challenge, especially if this is not something you or your organization does on a regular basis. As you think about what’s feasible, know that books can be purchased directly from Lee & Low at our generous event discount. Email authorvisits@leeandlow.com for more information.

Another excellent option for facilitating book sales is teaming up with a bookseller in your area. Doing so supports the local economy and builds your book-ish community connections. Head over to Bookshop to find the independent bookstore nearest you.
