Submission Guidelines for Illustrators

LEE & LOW BOOKS is a quality children's book publisher that specializes in multicultural themes. Our goal is to meet the need for books that address children of color by providing books that all children can enjoy and which promote a greater understanding of one another. We publish multicultural literature that is relevant to young readers.

Our books feature children/people of color and fall within a range of genres including contemporary and historical fiction, biography, poetry, nonfiction, and more. We are particularly interested in hearing from illustrators whose cultural, ethnic, or racial backgrounds and experiences support their knowledge of diverse cultures.

We are open to seeing work from professional illustrators and artists at all levels of experience. Illustrators who have worked in other fields and are interested in illustrating books are also welcome.

Art Sample Submissions:

We are happy to consider art samples for picture books, graphic novels, and book jackets. We are especially interested in samples that feature children/people of color and that show an ability to illustrate the same character consistently over many scenes. You may send your sample to editorial@leeandlow.com. Please include a link to your website. (Note that all manuscript submissions sent to this address will be deleted unread.)

If you are an artist of color who will be in the New York City area, and you would like to meet with one of our editors for a portfolio review, please send an e-mail with an art sample to the address above, including the dates of your visit, your email address, and the address of your website. An editor will be in touch to arrange a meeting, if possible.

Thank you for considering Lee & Low Books and Tu Books as artistic homes for your work.
